Penney Wise

Penney

The cashier released a tumble of coins into my palm. I began to slip them into my wallet when the grimy, dark orb caught my eye.

Is that really a penny?

The coin looked like it had been spit out of a carburetor and spun through a blender. The temptation was high to disinfect the thing or better yet, throw it away. I’m not sure why I kept it.

It’s just that there was something about it that gave me pause. Despite it’s wretched state it still had value. The mind boggling truth of the matter is that despite my wretched state, I still have value. In. God’s. Eyes.

Aren’t you grateful that when we stand behind the shadow of the cross we become:

Significant

“…You’re my dear Somebody.” Hosea 2:23

Beloved

“…and his banner over me is love.” Song of Songs 2:4

Transformed

“God will create a new thing in this land: A transformed woman will embrace the transforming God.” Jer. 31:22

Perhaps that ugly, ol’ penney has more than “meets the eye” worth. It may soon become a charm on a chain. A reminder for me of chains that no longer bind and the gifting of a beauty I could have never obtained but for the grace God.

Now that’s what I call penny wise.
