Green Beans & Cupcakes

Tay & Jeff holding hands 2

I usually schedule blog posts about a month in advance. (Helps for when Crazy Town strikes.) Roughly six weeks ago I thought today would be the perfect time to share about décor’ for hosting a graduation reception. (Our daughter’s is this upcoming Saturday.)

There’s just one problem.

I don’t have fun décor ideas to share. Can you say, “Whoops!”?

I suppose I could say something trite like “Best laid plains, blah, blah, blah.” But the reality is this… matching plates, streamers that sparkle and centerpieces that elicit “oohs” and “aahs” aren’t my highest priority right now.

Our family nearly lost someone in recent weeks. The clarity that death brings to life is astounding.

Make no mistake, we’re eager to celebrate our sweet “Taylor Tot”. We can’t wait to celebrate a meal with friends and family. But details are sketchy. All we know for certain is that we’re serving green beans and cupcakes.  But that’s OK! We’re less enthralled by the trappings of the day than we are of time spent together with guests and each other.

Case in point…my normally psychotic self would have been doling out orders to accomplish in five days what normal people would do in five weeks: re-landscape, sanitize the garage, clean all the windows and re-brick the house. (Kidding.) (Kind of.)

Chores have been usurped by the planting of cherished memories. Leggy teenage bodies have been strewn  across the family room floor. We’ve told stories and our family has caught up on life. Instead of inadvertently brushing shoulders with the ones we brush teeth with——– we’ve intentionally talked.

The point to this lil’ ol’ post? If you or a loved one is on the crest of a wonderful family event in which design, décor and details communicate love, I hope you run with it!

Enjoy every ounce of it!

But if for whatever reason you suspect your décor this year will be less than it will be more—- join me!

Let’s embrace it!

I’m here to testify that:

When what we do is motivated by love the imperfect becomes perfect.

The ordinary becomes divine. Even green beans and cupcakes can rank five stars.
