Where Do You See Yourself In 5 Years?

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

You’ve been asked that question before, right? It’s a favorite of college admissions boards, scholarship essays, and job interviews.

Of course, my favorite answer was always, “In a mirror,” but no one else ever seemed to find that quite as humorous and I did.

Really, though…where do you see yourself in 5 years?

That question is one I’ve been asking myself a lot lately. It’s a question I’m currently seeking an answer to because I haven’t really asked it in a while.

Which is why I’m asking you to think about it. Not just in passing, but really think about it.

Let’s put it this way –

What if you had some magic beans like Jack? You plant them tonight before you go to bed, and 5 years from now your life will look exactly like you want it to.

What do you see?

What are you doing? Who is with you? How do you feel? What have you accomplished?

I think this is one of the most important DoAheads you can do for yourself right now.

See, if you’re like me, you may have been going through the motions for a few years. Maybe you got stuck in this rut: get up, go to work, come home, work out if you have time, fix dinner, eat dinner, shower, sleep. And then start it all over again tomorrow – rinse and repeat.

To me, the easiest way to get stuck in that rut is to not have any idea of where you’re going. You become a slow stream flowing down hill along the path of least resistance instead of raging river – cutting it’s own path over time.

You must be able to picture reaching your destiny and doing what you were created to do before you can ever dream of getting there.

Sure, sometimes people have things just fall into their laps, but more often than not there’s some planning and some work involved.

Lionel Messi, arguably one of the greatest soccer plays in the world had this to say about it,

“It took me 17 years and 114 days to become an overnight success.”

We can just sit around waiting for things to happen to us – we have go out there and make things happen for us.

Now – before I go much further, we must never neglect to surrender to the authority of our sovereign God. He can work in and through us to accomplish much greater and much different things than we ever dreamed. But, we can’t just sit around waiting and doing nothing.

  • So, take 5-10 minutes.
  • Get a pen and some paper.
  • Start writing.

Really picture what you see in your magic bean world 10 years from now…go ahead.

Once you’ve done that the really fun part begins – the DoAhead part begins. You know what you want to see, so how do you get there?

Where do you need to be in 3 years? Then – 2 years? Now – 1 year? Next – 6 months?

God has a plan for your life.

He has a bigger purpose in store for you than you can even fathom. He is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). So, let’s make sure we don’t waste the opportunity to do it.

What do you need to do to reach your 6-month goal?

Write down 3 things you can commit to today that you will start doing this week. Now – don’t write them down if you aren’t serious. This is a commitment!

Here’s the best part once you’ve written it down – tell someone else about your plan!

You chances of reaching your goals are exponentially higher when you:

#1 Write them down.

#2 Tell someone else to hold you accountable.

Are you ready? Can you commit to DoAhead and determine the path that leads to your destiny and your desired future? Even if it means forging your own path?

You can do it! So, where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Please share yours below if you feel comfortable – I’d love to read them!
