Years ago I stumbled upon the most amazing “junk find”!
I was strolling through a second hand store when I found a pottery crafted wall hanging.
It had muted copper colors and was a perfect match for a lonely wall in our guest bedroom.
What was even more amazing was the inscribed quote about legacy.
It’s a little long but worth the read.
Legacy…
“The cumulative effects of an individual’s life which have the potential to influence future generations-manifested in those beliefs, attitudes, philosophies, talents, and traits that were impactful enough during the course of a lifetime to have a continuing sway.”
“Continuing sway.” Is there anything that has more continuing sway than a mother?
No doubt the word “mother” brings forth unique thoughts for each one of us.
For some it’s warmth & safety.
For others it’s encouragement or the example of a life characterized by hard work .
For yet others, the word stirs up thoughts of laughter, lightheartedness and perspective.
Whatever the characteristic, “mother” is often equated with love.
I know that’s the kind of legacy I want to leave.
However…
This morning my quiet time was haunted by the memory of the less than gracious tongue I had with my children the night before.
I wish I never lost my patience. I wish I were the best Mom ever. I wish I were perfect.
My “Mother’s Day Legacy” was in need of a boost.
Fortunately, the forgiveness I found this morning is the same kind of forgiveness that’s flows freely at 1 North Harmon.
I used to beat myself with a stick over my maternal failings but I’ve learned it doesn’t do any good.
Instead, I take encouragement from what I read this morning.
“So chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense…And regardless of what else you put on, wear love, It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.” Col. 3:12-14 MSG
Bottom line…I have a legacy of love to leave and it begins with me pushing the “re-start” button this very minute.
In fact, I think I’ll go get dressed now…in my “basic, all-purpose garment”!
Blessings this upcoming Mother’s Day!
