Confession. Sometimes I’m a little slow when it comes to fashion. When Doc met me thirty plus years ago I was sporting a white cowboy shirt with a blue bandanna tied around my neck. I realize that in the proper setting this would be acceptable attire. Unfortunately, it was my way of dressing up for the downtown crowd. Let me reiterate, I don’t always get fashion trends.
This of course brings me to the point of this whole post. It has only been in the past 18 months that I had heard of Spanx or other “body smoothing” undergarments.
Now that I’m out from under my rock I have a few thoughts on this particular genre’ of clothing.
- Who exactly invented these devices of torture? If it was a woman, did she have a deep seeded vendetta against her own kind?
- Do these undergarments come with a 1-800 number for respiratory support when needed?
- Most importantly, is there a hot-line available for when you are home alone and your undergarment has you in a half nelson as you try to remove the “torso tube” by pulling it over your head?
All kidding aside I know these kind of garments are intended to be a woman’s best friend. And they certainly have their place. Obviously, we all have different body types which means each of us will benefit from different fashion tricks.
And yet, I can’t help but think that moderation is key.
I’m not opposed to a slimming undergarment but I am opposed to discomfort. If you are on the same page as I, one thought would be the use of a Lycra camisole or tank. They smooth out the “fluff” but they do it with a little less fervor.
Another great help is a high waist “pull up” jean or pant. There are amazing jeans/pants out there that have a high, flat waistband and snug fit. The Lycra in the fabric helps smooth over the bodies lumps and bumps!
Do you have a favorite undergarment that helps with tummy flattening or muffin top minimization?
If you do, please share! (No really——PLEASE share.) I and your fellow DoAhead sisters would love to be liberated!
